The raw berries are edible and sweetest after the fall of their second year. Small quantities of berries are used to flavor stew, meat, and vegetable dishes such as sauerkraut and potato salad. The berries are dark blue-black, but appear pale blue-white when covered in natural wax. They are round to somewhat irregular in shape, with two lobes and a diameter of 5-9 mm. Colorado juniper berries have a fresh, fruity citrus flavor with a piney spiciness. Utah juniper berries have a strong pine-like, citrusy, rosemary flavor.
